Koi Music Festival 2013 kicked off on Friday the 13th in downtown Kitchener, ON, with a shorter line up but not short of any deliverance. Main Stage hosted a free evening concert with Treble Charger as their headliner and official after parties.

Continuing on to the following Saturday; roads were closed, tents were set up, bands and attendees arrived early to check out what there was to offer. Artist registration and media check in was a breeze and easy to find as they had their own office running at the main intersection of the festival equipped with vibrant custom KOI window art. Among the rest of the downtown area was full of twelve scattered venues that were put to use through out the day.

The Chrysalids Theatre was a seated venue with adequate floor space for viewers to stand. The line up for this venue was strictly bands of a hardcore aspect that was an unusual match but worked out for bands such as Auras and Expire that filled the standing area and dispersed seating. Other bands of the day were Cardinals Pride, Gracefield, Obey the Brave and No Bragging Rights. This venue also possessed very attention-grabbing art of different figures and subject matter that were enclosed with gas masks. The pieces were by Roman Dmitri, assorted in different canvas sizes, potent colors and black and white that were all displayed for sale.

In contrast, The Wax with an upstairs location had a very narrow pit but was able to fill a high capacity due to its length. Bands such as Three Crowns, Crystalyne, Searching for Satellites and The Salads of all different genres brought a volume of different crowds. Three Crowns, Kitchener natives, played to a full room as this was their third year returning strong.

Over at Main Stage was Baptized in Blood, Vanna, Emmure, Cute is What We Aim For, Bayside, Classified and many more. The dimming temperature as the night progressed kept the main crowd huddled and the 19+ section flowing.

Overall, KOI Fest didn’t see nearly as many as attendees as last year with bands such as Stray From the Path, Counterparts, and Northlane but effective use of social media tools from the fish himself was used before, during, and after the festival. The parading mascot was an added touch as the day ran smoothly. KOI Fest was home to a lot of great musicians of a wide variety and continues to be in years to come.
