PHOTOS+REVIEW: FOR TODAY w/ LIKE MOTHS TO FLAMES, STRAY FROM THE PATH, THE PLOT IN YOU & FIT FOR A KING | 794 Bathurst, Toronto

Fight the Silence Album Release Tour graced Toronto’s frigid winter weather at the new Annex Wreckroom now known as 794 Bathurst on Tuesday night. Headliners For Today with special guests Like Moths to Flames, Stray from the Path, The Plot in You, and Fit for a King made for an exceptional bill.

Upon arriving 30 minutes before doors an extensive line already trailed down the salty sidewalks parallel to the vans and trailers. Waiting warmly in the Pizza Pizza on the corner until after doors, to my surprise, the line remained the same! The show was originally booked at the Opera House in which I was notified about the change through researching their website for door times. I took a gander to track down an event page and when I finally did the attendance level for 794 Bathurst was only at 90 attending. It was relieving to see that word got around and the venue was filling up because these are all resilient bands that bring something different to the table.

Fit for a King wrapped up a pretty solid set, and I was pleased to see what they sound like live for the first time. The crowd was full for The Plot in You but really stepped it up for their song Miscarriage with the bouncy guitar intros. Their eerie artwork for “First Born” which was released in 2011 is how I first came across them on The Daily Mosh (back when the music downloading site was in its prime). Captivating to say the least and followed by a great album.

Stray from the Path, the band I had been waiting for the whole night or better yet, since the tour was announced followed The Plot in You.  Without being biased, they stole the show. They opened with Mad Girl, a crowd favourite and intensive start right from the intro is the perfect way to kick things off. Even after their outro lead into a 40 second segment from Landmines, not only did they use this technique once but also after Bring it Back to the Streets finishing with False Flag. Canada’s very own Andrew Neufeld made an appearance on Bring it Back to the Streets also Brandon from Structures on Damien. A whole lot of talent was brought to that stage and will keep us waiting until Strays return on this summers Warped Tour.

Like Moths to Flames is generally a well-rounded band live and they are just easy to enjoy with their heavy and clean vocals. When their set was over it was a long set up time for headliners For Today. They set up their own lights as it left a cool effect over the entirety of the room through out their performance hitting every square inch of that place. The crowd became slightly sparser and I’m curious to know why. Is it because of last year’s speculation of the band being on the radar about homosexuality, the continual expressionism on their Christian faith, or is it just the older wave of fans have just grown out of the band? Whatever the case, when it comes down to it I just want to pay attention to the music for those 30-40 minutes and I have always enjoyed the music that they create, especially their older releases.
