On Saturday May 3rd, the MOD Club in Toronto was invaded by Primal Fear and their special guests.

Back when Rob Halford quit Judas Priest, and the remaining of the English band were in the market for a new vocalist, Ralf Scheepers suddenly quit Gamma Ray and ran  for the spot, but was “beaten” if you will, by American singer Ripper Owens. Ralf went on to create Primal Fear, and the rest is history.

After a walk to the venue I entered to the start of a decent set opening band called Sovereign Council. These guys remind me of Within Temptation and I think they could get a better reaction playing in front of their fans as Primal Fear fans were just standing, trying to work out what the band was doing.

Answer With Metal followed with their set of heavy metal. These guys, on the other hand, connected with Primal Fear fans. By the way the crowd was rocking out you’d think that many in the audience owned a copy of this band’s album.

Third up were the headliners Primal Fear featuring founding member Tom Naumann(ex-Sinner) filling in for current guitar player Magnus Karlsson who sadly sat out the band’s touring activities due to family emergency back in Germany. Any apprehensions about Tom’s ability were quickly put to rest by his performance. The fans approved him.

The audience was devouring every second of the 60 minutes, 16 song, especially such gems as ‘Delivering The Black’ and ‘Metal Is Forever’. Ralf’s multi-octave range delighted the fans. Damn, can this guy still sing! A lot of singers’ voices start to deteriorate as they age, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at all with the German frontman. His voice hasn’t lost anything over the years. If anything, it has only gotten stronger!

The sound is loud and proud with special attention to paid to Canadian sticksman Randy Black’s plundering  drums. I was really surprised when I found out he is Canadian. What a nice surprise.

All in all, Primal Fear gave a pummeling set from start to finish to an enthusiastic crowd.
