CONCERT COVERAGE: FLOGGING MOLLY + GUESTS | Echo Beach

On Tuesday September 3rd 2019 Le Butcherettes, The Devil Makes Three, Flogging Molly and Social Distortion were set to perform at RBC Echo Beach in Toronto and three out of the four did including Flogging Molly. I was so excited to be at this show because I had seen Flogging Molly perform twice before and their performances never disappoint. They’re an Irish-American Celtic punk band that have been around for 22 years!

As the crowd waited you could hear The Who’s song “Baba O’Riely” begin to play and then all seven members of Flogging Molly began to take the stage. They started the show off with their 2002 hit  “Druken Lullabies” which always gets the crowd going, and dancing the Irish jig. Lead singer Dave King joined the crowd dancing up and down and across the stage. He then spoke about how much mosquitos loved Guinness beer, took a gulp, and said yup there’s a bugger in here. Towards the middle of the show he spoke briefly about US politics but then started to chant the first chorus of “We Will Rock You” by Queen:

Buddy, you’re a boy, make a big noise
Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday
You got mud on your face, you big disgrace
Kicking your can all over the place, singin’

This really got the crowd going as they chanted back with their fists in the air:

We will, we will rock you

This led into their song “Crushed (Hostile Nations)”. And it wouldn’t be a Flogging Molly show if it didn’t end with Dave mouthing the words to Monty Python’s song “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, as it played in the background as the band began to leave the stage.

But then the unthinkable happened, someone came on stage and announced that Social Distortion was cancelled due to the incoming lightning storm that was approaching RBC Echo Beach. Many were disappointed as you could hear all the boos, and nooooos in the audience. We all scurried out of there in fear of the rain beginning. I was disappointed that I didn’t get to see Social Distortion perform but on the bright side I was really glad I got to see Flogging Molly’s energetic and stellar performance.
